FAQs

Your lubrication and corrosion protection questions answered.

Prolan Enduro Medium Grade is best for this application. A coating every 1-2 years is all that is required depending on the situation. When cleaning with water if the Prolan coating doesn’t bead up like on a waxed car bonnet, it’s time to recoat.

Try a sample area to see if there is a reaction with the Prolan product. If there isn’t, go ahead and coat. If it has been previously coated with Prolan, just recoat. If you wish to clean up the surface first, use Prolan degreaser, leave for 20 minutes, and water blast off the old coating and recoat with the new.

Waterblast the surface, allow it to dry, and then apply Prolan. If the surface is reasonably clean or has a minimal amount of dust, you can apply Prolan without water blasting. Flaking rusted areas should be scraped or wire buffed before application.

First, shake the can well. Then lift the two red or white tabs on the lid and pull them up to create the nozzle. You can then unscrew the lid and pull out the two red or white tabs sealing tab inside the nozzle.

Start by shaking the can well to make sure the contents are mixed. You can then apply it using a compressed air system, airless spray system, or sure shot cannister. If this equipment is not available, place the tin in a tub of hot water for 20 minutes and then spray through the trigger.
Note that all equipment can be cleaned after completing the application by flushing with hot water.

Don’t thin out your Prolan product. We have created different grades to meet your requirements – light-medium, heavy, extreme, and grease. All are for different uses and have already been diluted to the correct viscosity for each application.

Use Prolan Extreme under the chassis and engine bay. For the cosmetic surfaces, such as the bonnet and mudguards or areas that are in human contact, spray and buff in with a soft rag. This will leave a wax finish. The time between recoats depends on the situation. However, when washing, look for the water beading up. If it doesn’t, it’s time to apply another coat.

Prolan will protect the dead corners under the deck against corrosion where the cut grass is not polishing the steelwork.

Our Extreme product dries with a clean, waxy finish. This is something other lanolin products are unable to do.

During the summer months when temperatures are around 20°C or more, there will be no issue using any Prolan product. However, in the winter, the Heavy Grade and Extreme products should be warmed by placing the tin in a bucket of hot water for 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can apply using a compressed air system, airless spray system, or sure shot cannister. All other Grades are easy to apply at any temperature.

Cold water blasting will remove the dirt and mud but not the Prolan.

Four litres of Prolan is required to coat the Canam or a small 4x4. Coverage rates are 8-10 m2 per litre side by side, depending on the surface profile.

This depends on the product being used and the situation it is placed in. However, as a guide, the Medium Grade product on a beach quad bike should last two years for a fisherman going on the beach weekly. An application on a quad used on a dairy farm will last one year. Our Extreme product used under a 4x4, tractor, fertiliser spreader, truck chassis, or motorhome will last 4-10 years depending on the situation.

Our anti-seize products are environmentally friendly, non-carcinogenic, natural, and sustainable. They also offer performance benefits that include creating an electrolysis barrier and preventing galling on stainless steel threads. Our products won’t wash out or dry hard, and they are suitable for potable drinking water and similar applications as they have Eurofins approval, MPI C15 approval, and NSF H1 approval.

No, sunlight will break it down.

Our products are New Zealand-made, plus we continuously invest in R&D to improve our products and ensure they meet our customers’ requirements. The percentage of lanolin that we use is also generally higher than alternative products, so Prolan offers longer protection and lubrication. Also, our Extreme grade product will leave a clean waxy finish that is not achievable with lanolin products from our competitors.

Paint should be applied first, with a coat of Prolan applied over the top after the paint has hardened. Otherwise, the paint will stick to the Prolan wax instead of the steel surface.

Yes. If it is a cosmetic application, buff on our Extreme product using a soft rag.

We offer a special Prolan degreaser that can be sprayed on, left for 20 minutes, and then water blasted back to the original surface.

A coating of Prolan Extreme applied to the internal cavities of a boat hull will prevent the air and moisture from getting to the surface. This will prevent corrosion.

Using compressed air, an airless system, or a sure shot spray cannister.

We change the percentages of lanolin in each of the different grades to make them suitable for different applications and to achieve the best results for lubrication or corrosion protection.

It’s best to remove it otherwise the Prolan will act as an anti-splatter.

The Extreme product will stay clean if left to set for 24hrs before use. The other Prolan products will attract a fine layer of dust and then nothing else will stick.

There are three types of aerosols. An orange-top Medium Grade aerosol that has a spray-through dome that is activated by pressing the button on the top. There is a Medium Grade blue-top aerosol that has a smart straw that can be operated with the straw in the lowered or horizontal position, depending on how you would like to apply it. There is also a black-top Extreme Grade aerosol that has a button that you press when applying.

Prolan will not affect rubber, wiring, or plastics.

The Extreme product is excellent if rubbed into a wooden surface. In fact, any of the Prolan grades will offer a level of protection for wood – this is what polishes a shearing shed floor.

Prolan grease is excellent in slow-moving pins, bearings, or bushes, but not on car or trailer wheel bearings.

When you use Prolan, you can go for longer periods between applications. Prolan also acts as a corrosion inhibitor, and it won’t evaporate off or affect rubber components or wiring. It can be used as an anti-spatter, it repels moisture, and water will not wash it off.

We are organising workshops that will apply the coating for us. Please call the 0800PROLAN number and we can help locate the applicator closest to you.
